Military Deployment Program

The Military Deployment Program provided boarding for dogs and cats belonging to members of the U.S. Armed Forces who were deployed to combat areas, for example, Iraq or Afghanistan. Their pets stayed at Sugarland Ranch for the duration of their time out of the country on a sliding fee schedule as mutually agreed and/or a donation, if they are able.  This program operated also by community donations supporting the program.   Soldiers’ Companion Pets were cared for in our safe, loving, home-like environment.  Daily exercise, great specialized meal service, comfortable sleeping areas & plenty of love and attention were provided to each Pet.  Sugarland Ranch used video conferencing programs such as Skype  keeping our Soldiers and Pets in contact with each other.

A Letter from Dakota

Hi my name is “Dakota” and I’ve been staying with Mack and Robyn at Sugarland Ranch since this past March. I’m part of Sugarland’s Military Deployment Program. My “Dad” is serving his 4th tour in the Mideast . Actually, my story is unique because I’m retired military; I served our troops in the Mideast as a professional bomb canine; I’m proud of my tour because I was able to save lives also. Due to my age, I retired and then was sent to the Army’s canine rehab unit where I was re-trained as a therapy dog. I’m my Dad’s therapy girl and I love him very much and he loves me too. He says that he can now do his job because he knows that I’m well cared for and loved at Sugarland. Sugarland has a history of helping numerous military personnel that had no options available to care for their beloved pet companions. So here I am, I gained some weight since I’m not working anymore but boy the cuisine here is really good! My Dad says he may be coming home early 2016 and if possible, I guess we’ll be having a small reception for him and I’ll be the honored guest. I’m sure we’ll be sending invites for our reunion. I know I’ll recognize him and I miss him very much. Please support Sugarland’s Military Deployment Program so that they can continue to help in the future. For now, I’m signing off,

Love, “Dakota”
